In addition to his work as composer, conductor and educator, Dr. Jarrett has had considerabe experience as a developer of  computer applications in the field of music.  Working in assembly language early in the 1980's, he created MusicPrinter for the Apple II computer, the first commercial music-notation software program.  From 1986 to 1989 he was Director of Software Development for Temporal Acuity Products, a firm specializing in computer applications for music education.  There he oversaw the development of MusicPrinterPlus for the IBM computer.  This was the first software program to incorporate powerful notation-to-MIDI capabilities.

While Chair of the Composition Department at Berklee College during the  1990's, Jarrett was associated with Ronald Thomas in the development of MusicLab, an instructional software package for training basic musical skills.  He also innovated the Conducting Lab at Berklee, in which students control playback of different sections of a MIDI orchestra while following a fellow student conductor.

In 2002, together with his daughter Lori, he founded Virtuoso Works, later to be renamed Notion Music, Inc.  There he designed and oversaw the development of NOTION software from its beginning to version 2.2.
